AMBIO was a five-year R&D Integrated Project, funded by the EC's 6th Framework Programme, and conducted by the University of Birmingham.
The project  concluded in 2009/10.  The Nanocyl material, as used in the project,  was refined in conjunction with further research at the University of Mons and eventually  commercialised as NANOWAVES.
A partnership with the specialist paint manufacturer Lippens, has provided a smooth path to market for Nanowaves.
Nanowaves has proved to be the most effective foul-release coating ever produced, and its hard finish overcame the issues typical of existing "soft" foul release coatings.
Nanowaves has now been proven on a variety of commercial and pleasure craft.

An expected product life of ten+ years has so far been supported by seven years of actual and continual use (initial full testing on two tankers for CMB Group of Antwerp), with a reported 6% fuel saving (~1,000 liters/day and associated CO2 emissions saving) on commercial shipping, due to the uniquely designed nano-level surface of the coating.
Further commercial testing has been undertaken with the French operator Bourbon, who have now also proceeded with a fleetwide programme.

Whilst Nanowaves has proven just as effective on pleasure craft, the issue is that most pleasure craft lie idle for long periods.

In searching for a solution to this problem, a partnership was formed with Harsonic, producers of the most sophisticated ultrasonic devices on the market.
Ultrasonics, in various forms, have been used in the marine biofouling field, for many years, but with limited success on pleasure craft.
The breakthrough discovery of this partnership is that with the advanced ultrasound system from Harsonic, the "rough" nano-level surface of the Nanowaves coating actually puts the hull into a level of resonance that ensures the soundwaves are distributed evenly and completely throughout the vessel.
This combination of two stand alone technologies provides an effective and 100% eco-friendly system, in both static and dynamic conditions.
